How to Make Your Own Wedding Rings

Make Your Own Wedding Rings…something I was first asked about many years ago, and something that I kind of now assume everyone else knows about too. But…I’m starting to realise that perhaps that isn’t actually the case, especially after my recent bit of media coverage where the local journalist really didn’t know that making your own rings was a “thing….Cue this blog….

So realistically, what’s is possible for two people without years of jewellery making experience to achieve in a single day?

When I’m commissioned to make a pair of plain (well I say plain, but I actually mean heavily textured like the rest of my jewellery) wedding rings, I would usually block off around 3-4 hours. If it’s a shaped wedding ring, I might add another 30 minutes to an hour to this.

I’ve been doing this for far too many years to remember now, so for someone who hasn’t made a ring before, I would usually double that time. Your rings don’t have to be textured like mine are, you can put a mirror polish on them if you want to, but if you’re looking to add a lot of extra detail or set stones, then that’s something that takes years of making mistakes to learn how to do!

If you do want extra detail on your rings though, it doesn’t mean that you can have a hand in making them, as you can still spend a day making the main band parts, before handing them over to me to add on the extra bits and set any stones afterwards. If this is the case, you’d just pay for a standard wedding ring workshop day, and I would give you a quote for the additional work. This is all sorted out before your workshop day, so that we have the most time possible for making.

Sometimes, couples have old sentimental jewellery that they want to reuse to create their wedding rings. I love reusing old jewellery and so this is always absolutely possible, but again will need a little extra time. If you want to melt down the metal yourself, we’d usually start a bit earlier and most likely finish a bit later. It’s also a bit more a a “full on” day. Alternatively, I can melt down and prepare your metal for you in advance, and if there’s lots of small stones to remove, then it would always need to be this second option.

I really love running wedding ring workshops, or civil partnership rings, or just “I love you more than anything” rings (who needs an actual wedding these days)! It probably brings as much joy to me as it does to my clients, when I hear that “wow” as they add a final mirror shine polish to the inside of their rings. I love seeing how even though virtually all of the couples that come have no previous experience, that they are all able to turn a little strip of metal into something beautiful enough that they’re going to want to wear it on their finger, to signify their love for their partner every day forever!
